Part of the JAS mission statement is to support activities that improve the quality of life in our rural community. Fort Saskatchewan 4-H Beef Club is an important part of an ag activity in our area called the UFA Country Classic. This Sunday Beef Show has been set-up to be in conjunction with Fort Sask’s Achievement Day. It is another opportunity for the Beef Club and surrounding 4-H Beef Clubs to show their projects and get the experience needed to better their knowledge of the industry.
Fort Saskatchewan 4-H Beef Club operates from October to May. The season begins with weigh-in of the beef projects in late October. Events and fundraisers happen throughout the year. Calf tours of member’s farms, tire recycling, grooming and showmanship clinics, mock shows and a good number of potluck meals are held through out the season. Members range in age from 9 to 20 and most have a steer project, some have a heifer project as well. Record books are kept on all projects and weight gain, feed rations and costs associated with raising beef is under the care of the member to record. Public speaking is held in January and successful speakers have the chance to advance on.
Fort Saskatchewan 4-H Beef Achievement Day, show and sale is always held the weekend after the long weekend in May. If you are looking to put prime beef in your freezer, plan to attend and purchase a calf. Members work hard to ready these animals for the ring and appreciate the support of local businesses and individuals.
Whether you are looking to join 4-H or want to help out in other ways, please contact Murray Skippen at 780-719-5852 for more information on how to get involved.
